CardLife: Bring Your Cardboard Fantasies To Fruition

Staff – June 25, 2018 at 1:52 AM

What can you make out of recycled cardboard? In the world of CardLife, anything!

We’ve been watching the development of CardLife that’s now available in early access. It’s perfect for fans of the survival game, but with an unusual twist: It’s set in a world constructed entirely from recycled cardboard.

The British developer Freejam Games, based in Portsmouth, is using something unique called “Connect the Dots” (CTD) crafting which makes everything in the world editable. That means you can hack together entire worlds using the in-game tools. Freejam is committed to player creativity, as their previous work on the fully customizable robot battle game Robocraft shows.

What’s promising about CardLife is the possibility of sharing with others. PC games have always been about building communities, online and IRL, and CardLife allows players to team to up for highly-complex engagements. Do you want to be on top of a mountain to defend your position or explore a teeming city at the world’s center?

We love the unique, tactile experience of playing as a child and turning paper into dolls. Freejam tells us that this game is just the beginning as their looking to transcend the title of “game,” and make CardLife a platform. It’s a big challenge, but we’ll be keeping an eye on the official servers to see what the community dreams up.
